London Outdoors Show

EN: I'm 4 days in London for several visits. The outdoors show (including bike show, travel and boat show) is a yearly event to see new products and for me to take the temperature about the UK market. First thing to catch my eye was the Torpedalo, a pedal boat designed to cross the Atlantic, like Jean-Gabriel Chelala did in 2008 except his boat was not beautifully designed like the Torpedalo. Yesterday I found out they had a few speakers and I rushed not to miss Ed Stafford. Most of you have read about him when he hit the news in August 2010 after completing his expedition walking the Amazon. For the last long end of the trip he was accompanied by Gadiel "Cho" Sanchez Rivera who is now in England learning English and will soon get education, which is great.

Today I went to visit the Royal Geographic Society. I had been there in 2009 but this time I could visit the Foyle Reading room, which is a mecca of information like a collection of maps or books.

FR: Je suis à Londres pendant 4 jours pour effectuer diverses visites. L'outdoors show (qui fait aussi le vélo, les bateaux et le voyage) est un événement annuel pour voir les nouveaux produits et pour moi prendre la température du marché Anglais. Ce qui m'a intéressé d'emblée fût le Torpedalo, bateau conçu pour traverser l'Atlantique comme l'a fait Jean-Gabriel Chelala en 2008 mis à part que son engin était beaucoup moins profilé et techniquement beau. Hier, je remarque qu'ils ont quelques intervenants dont Ed Stafford.

Beaucoup d'entre-vous ont du lire dans les nouvelles en 2009 à propos de ce gars qui venait de terminer de descendre l'Amazone à pied. Pour la très longue et dernière partie il était accompagné de Gadiel "Cho" Sanchez Rivera qui apprend en ce moment l'Anglais en Angleterre et va bientôt commencer un cursus scolaire. Ce qui est fantastique.
Aujourd'hui, j'ai été visiter la Royal Geographic Society. J'y suis allé en 2009 et j'ai enfin pu accéder à la Foyle Reading room, qui est une réserve inépuisable de cartes et de livres.

The New Belgica

EN: I've met Eddy Stuer, leading the project to build a replica of the famous La Belgica, which was the boat led by Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache and made the first overwintering in Antarctica. Several other crew members included famous Roald Amundsen and Frederick Cook.

The building of the replica the New Belgica is located near Antwerp, which is a social project providing traineeship and motivating work for unemployed people. Currently it is expected that the boat will be completed by 2017 with a sailing tour. I will follow the building several times per year and will post photos in the New Belgica photo album.

FR: J'ai rencontré Eddy Stuer, qui mène le projet de la construction d'une réplique du célèbre La Belgica, navire commandé par Adrien de Gerlache et qui a réalisé le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Plusieurs membres de l'équipage incluaient Roald Amundsen et Frederick Cook.
La construction de la réplique Le New Belgica se situe près d'Anvers. Le projet est social car il donne une formation et une motivation à un groupe de personnes sans emploi. Pour l'instant la fin du chantier est estimée en 2017 et sera suivie d'un tour à la voile. Je vais suivre plusieurs fois par an la progression du chantier et je mettrai les photos dans l'album photo New Belgica.

Festival Les Voiles Polaires

EN: I attended the polar sailing film festival Les Voiles Polaires. The venue was in the fantastic Oceanographic institute in Paris. Films included trips done by GNGL polar travel agency, the TARA arctic drifting for science and the premiere of the film of Thierry Robert about the attempt of polar adventurers Sébastien Roubinet and Rodolphe André to sail across the arctic Ocean last summer.

FR: J'ai assisté au festival de film Les Voiles Polaires à Paris. La salle était magnifique dans l'institut Océanographique. Les films montraient les voyages organisés par l'agence GNGL, le film sur la dérive arctique du voilier scientifique TARA. J'ai apprécié la projection en première du film de Thierry Robert sur la tentative de traversée de l'Océan arctique par Sébastien Roubinet et Rodolphe André réalisé l'été dernier.

EN: For the 4th time I went this year to the adventure film festival in Dijon, always the good time to meet new adventurers and friends. A few days later I was invited to visit the Solar Impulse hangar in Switzerland. The plane is actually partly dismantled to check out what parts are starting to worn out before the others, basically to find the weaknesses to time.

FR: Pour la 4ème année consécutive, j'ai été au festival du film d'aventure de Dijon. L'ocacsion de rencontrer des aventuriers et des amis. Quelques jours plus tard, je visitais le hangar du Solar Impulse en Suisse. L'avion est en partie démonté afin de déterminer les pièces qui s'usent le plus vite, les faiblesses donc dues au temps passés en vol.

EN: I went to listen to the experience of Wim Smets on 8000m peak like Cho Oyu, Everest, Broad peak and K2. He didn't summit K2 the Killer Mountain but managed well to keep himself and others out of trouble. He had accomplished the 7 Summits before focusing on the 8000m peaks.

FR: J'ai écouté les récits de Wim Smets sur les sommets de plus de 8000m comme Cho Oyu, Everest, Broad peak et K2. Il n'a pas réussi le K2 "la montagne tueuse" mais il a réussi à s'entirer sans problème et a tirer d'affaire un autre alpiniste. Il a réussi les 7 sommets et se concentre maintenant sur les montagnes de plus de 8000m.

EN: After ending on the beach of Ostend my BelgiKayak expedition around Belgian's waterways yesterday, I drove to Nurnberg Germany to Kanumesse or PaddleExpo. I saw of course my sponsors Seabird Designs and Select Paddles who were also showing their new products. I took the opportunity to meet kayak magazines editors to have a featured article about my expedition and presented myself to several potential sponsors. There's nothing better than a human contact.
I talked to Björn Thomasson the Swedish designer of several Seabird kayaks who explained me how he started designing his own kayaks.

I also met Sebastian Plura Nillssen of the Svalbard360 expedition that ended in drame when he was attacked and bitten by a polar bear. He has an impressive scar on the shoulder.

FR: Après avoir terminé sur la plage d'Ostende l'expédition BelgiKayak sur les voies navigables Belges, j'ai pris la route vers Nuremberg en Allemagne pour assister à Kanumesse ou PaddleExpo (la foire des sports de pagaie/kayak). J'y ai rencontré mes sponsors Seabird Designs et Select Paddles qui montraient leurs nouveaux produits. J'ai été me présenter à des sponsors potentiels et des rédacteurs en chefs de magazines pour avoir un article sur mon expédition. Rien ne vaut les contacts humains.
J'ai discuté avec Björn Thomasson, le designer de certains kayaks de Seabird, qui m'a expliqué comment il a commencé a construire ses propres kayaks.
J'ai aussi rencontré Sebastian Plura Nillssen de l'expédition Svalbard360 qui s'est terminé en drame lorsque Sebastian s'est fait attaquer et mordre par un ours polaire. Il a une sacré cicatrice à l'épaule.

EN: This weekend in Dunkirk, I attended the first World Sea Film festival. Several films were in competition. As usual I enjoyed the films and met a few people. I talked mainly to Corentin de Chatel posing in front of Tara-Tari and Alessandro Di Benedetto. Among others, Anne Quéméré who finished 5 weeks ago the first kite crossing of the Pacific from Peru to Tahiti was present.

FR: Ce weekend à Dunkerque, j'ai assisté au premier Festival mondial du film de mer. Plusieurs films étaient en compétition. J'ai apprécié les films et surtout aimé discuter avec certaines personnes comme Corentin de Chatel qui pose devant son voilier Tara-Tari et Alessandro Di Benedetto. EN: In the past 2 weeks I've been privileged to meet several members of the Explorers Club. First I attended a speech of Jane Goodall in Brussels, then I met part of the EC board, staff and president in Berlin. I met there too many people to name but I especially enjoyed talking to Don Walsh and listening to the story of the reed boat by Norman Baker.

ENG: I followed the take off of the Solar Impulse in Switzerland and the flight progression during the day including several interviews done with the pilot André Borschberg. During the evening I attended the historical landing in Brussels airport, which I filmed. Bertrand Piccard had the original idea of flying around the world after he flew with Brian Jones around the world with a balloon in 1999. The Solar Impulse is a symbol to show that with appropriate technologies and teamwork we can do amazing things and all together work towards a better and sustainable world in terms of energy consumption. Harvesting the sun is one of the means to do so. The solar plane just does that and is able to store energy in its batteries to fly during the night. The round a world flight is planned in 2014.

FRA: J'ai suivi avec attention le décollage du Solar Impulse en Suisse, la progression en vol ainsi que plusieurs interviews faites du pilote André Borschberg. J'ai assisté à l'attérissage historique à l'aéroport de Bruxelles en soirée que j'ai filmée. Bertrand Piccard a eu l'idée de ce projet original après avoir terminé son tour du monde en ballon avec Brian Jones en 1999. Le Solar Impulse est un symbole qui montre qu'avec des technologies appropriées et du travail d'équipe on peut relever des défis exceptionnels et tous ensemble travailler envers un monde meilleur et durable en terme de consommation d'énergies. ENG: I've been in Leuven watching the new 58 minutes top-funny crazy-wall climbing of the Favresse brothers and Sean Villanueva. Last summer they went sailing along the coast of West Greenland with their mate Ben Ditto for big wall climbing. They opened 9 new routes and even received a few weeks ago the Piolet d'or award for that expedition. The entire audience was cracked up by the film as usual is full of good climbing scenes and fun. Here Vertical Sailing's trailer and the 5 webisodes serie on Patagonia's channel. And they still like to perform they expedition songs to entertain the audience as well (video below)

FRA: J'ai été à Leuven voir le nouveau film super-hillarant de grimpe de big wall des frères Favresse et de Sean Villanueva. L'été dernier, accompagné de leur pote Ben Ditto, ils ont été naviguer à l'Ouest de Groenland pour grimper des nouvelles faces de montagnes. Ils ont ouvert 9 routes et même reçu il y a 3 semaines le prix du Piolet d'or pour leur expédition. Toute la salle était fendue de rire car comme d'habitude le film était drôle et remplie d'images d'escalade superbes. ENG: Yesterday I spent 3 hours listening to Mr. Valcke who told me a part of the story of his great grandfather Louis Valcke while working for Henry Morton Stanley in Congo in the 80ies of the 19th century. HM Stanley being very famous for his quote finding David Livingstone in 1871 with a "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" but that was before going to Congo. I will soon write a summary of this talk and explain why Sir Henry Morton Stanley gave his kettle (in fact a samovar) to Louis Valcke. The story is inspiring and to me could be a base for a movie. The item is now in the hands of his great-grandson, who will auction it and a few other items on September the 6th in Brussels. Contact me if you want more info about the auction.

FRA: Hier j'ai échangé pendant 3 heures avec Mr. Valcke qui m'a raconté une partie de l'histoire de son arrière grand-père Louis Valcke lorsqu'il travaillait pour Henry Morton Stanley au Congo dans les années 80 du 19ème siècle. HM Stanley étant connu pour sa phrase lorsqu'il retrouva David Livingstone en 1871 avec un "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" mais cela était bien avant d'aller au Congo. Carrauntoohil highest peak of Ireland

ENG: I went peakbagging with Brian Leitten off of Killarney. We both climbed the 3 highest peaks of Ireland: Caher at 1001m, Carrauntoohil at 1039m and Beenkeragh at 1010m. It took us 3 hours up and 2,5 hours down. We started in fog covered mountains with small visibility, got lost, met a guided group to help us find the track and just on the summit the wind blew the clouds away to reveal the beauty of the place. Magic!

FRA:Non loin de Killarney, j'ai été gravir les 3 plus hauts sommets d'Irlande - Caher à 1001m, Carrauntoohil à 1039m et Beenkeragh à 1010m - avec Brian Leitton. Nous avons mis 3h pour la montée et 2,5 heures pour la descente. On a entamé la grimpe dans le brouillard légendaire, on s'est perdu, on a entendu un groupe que nous avons rejoint pour retrouver le chemin. Le vent a dégagé une vue superbe dès notre arrivée au sommet. Magique.

ENG: Back from Ireland, where I was a guest at the first Killarney Adventure film festival. I met again with Ripley Davenport I visited in Denmark last September. I enjoyed good laughs with Mikael Strandberg. I met also Pat Falvey's, Ireland biggest adventurer (2*7 summits, South Pole & more), Dr. Clare O'Leary (7 summits, South Pole), Tim Lavery, Jeremy Curl (Sahara & other East African deserts), Paul Kamphuis and Brian Leitten. I also enjoyed the countryside around Killarney, which I recommend definately if you wanna mix culture, outdoor activities, pretty girls & Guinness.

FRA: De retour d'Irlande où j'étais invité au premier festival d'aventure de Killarney. J'y ai revu Ripley Davenport à qui j'avais rendu visite au Danemark en septembre dernier. J'ai bien ri avec le Suédois Mikael Strandberg. J'ai aussi rencontré le plus grand aventurier Irlandais Pat Falvey (2* les 7 sommets, pôle sud et beaucoup plus encore), Clare O'Leary (7 sommets, pôle sud), Tim Lavery, Jeremy Curl (Sahara & autres déserts d'Afrique Oriental), Paul Kamphuis et Brian Leitten. J'ai adoré les alentours de Killarney que je recommande vivement pour avoir un bon mélange de culture, activités de plein air, jolies filles et la Guinness.

ENG: I have been this evening in Paris to attend the speech of Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. In 2 hours he explained what the actions of his teams have done, what's next and he answered also all questions of the audience, some being critics but he replied to all. It was often fun as he added anecdotes and I must say I was really inspired by what he said.

FRA: A Paris j'ai été écouter le discours de Paul Watson du Sea shepherd (le berger des mers). En 2 heures il a résumé les actions passées et futures de son association, souvent avoir humour armé d'anecdotes étonnantes. Il a aussi pris la peine de répondre à toutes les questions du public et même à certaines critiques. Je dois dire que j'ai été très inspiré par ce qu'il dit.

ENG: As last year I've been to Basel at the world's largest watch fair. I checked out watches that could be interesting for my expeditions. This year I visited RAKETA (Ракета=rocket) named in honor of Youri Gagarine. I had known of the watch since the brand is managing the facebook page of French writer and adventurer Sylvain Tesson, who I've met several times in the past 5 years. The watch I tested on my wrist is the new 24 hour polar watch used by Russian South pole expeditions in 1969.

FRA: Comme l'année passée j'ai été à la recherche de sponsors montres pour mes expéditions à la foire de Bâle. J'ai notamment visité RAKETA nommé en l'honneur de Youri Gagarine. Je connaissais la marque puisqu'elle gère la page facebook de l'écrivain et aventurier Sylvain Tesson que j'ai rencontré maintes fois depuis 5 ans. La montre testée à mon poignet est version nouvelle de la polaire 24 heures utilisée par les expéditions Russes au pôle Sud en 1969.

Retour in the Vercors

ENG: Last year, I've been testing nordic ski in the vercors. This year I went back and tested alpine ski touring or backcountry skiing. The snow was much better this year, I had good weather during 2 days than snow on the last day which is great for training. My boots were a bit too tight, which resulted in blisters to provoke a small wound and infection.

FRA: L'année passée, j'avais testé le ski de rando nordique. Cette année je suis retourné dans le Vercors pour m'initier au ski de rando Alpin. La neige était meilleure cette année, j'ai eu 2 journées ensolleilées et 1 jour de neige, ce qui est bien pour l'entraînement. Mes bottines étaient un peu trop serrées, j'ai eu des ampoules sur les tibias ce qui a résulté en une petite blessure et une belle infection.

ENG: I spent the afternoon in Nieuwegein near Utrecht at the Mountain Sport day organized by the Royal Dutch Alpine association (NKVB Koninklijke Nederlandse Klim- en Bergsport Vereniging). I attended the talk of Leo Houlding, who didn't fail to show the excellent British humor. Right after I listened and talked to Jolanda Linschooten who I contacted a 18 months ago to get an idea of her average daily distance while she trekked in Iceland in 2006.

FRA: J'ai passé l'après-midi à Nieuwegein près de Utrecht à la journée du sport de montagne organisée par l'association Royale Alpin Néerlandaise (NKVB). J'ai écouté Leo Holding qui n'a pas failli à la réputation de l'humour Anglais. Ensuite j'ai écouté Jolanda Linschooten, aventurière que j'avais contacté il y a 18 mois pour obtenir une indication sur la distance moyenne qu'elle avait parcouru en Islande en 2006.

ENG: This I went to Munchen in Germany. On Saturday I met 2 Explorers Club members Julian Monroe Fisher and Axel Thorer. The Sunday was very busy as I visited as much as possible the outdoor products at ISPO. Le dimanche étais très actif car j'ai visté le salon professionnel ISPO et les produits outdoor. Ci-dessus, quelques photos notamment la tente HeimPlanet Cave, les bottes Baffin qui résistent aux environnements polaires, l'action cam GoPro 3D HD et produits de Klymit pour contrôler l'isolation en utilisant un gas et l'épaisseur de la couche que l'on désire.

Eupen walk and The Cho Oyu Project

ENG: I went walking near Eupen in the Ardennes with Damien François (photo), a Belgian alpinist, author, cultural anthropologist and conceiver of The Cho Oyu project. He was just back from Ama Dablam, the mountain I saw last year during my cultural walk towards the Everest. While walking, we discussed about our expeditions' ideas, the Himalayas and the people we both met. We also spend time checking out the dam of a beaver colony that relocated itself after the floods that have struck Belgium the past weeks.

FRA: J'ai été marcher près d'Eupen dans les Ardennes avec Damien François (photo), un alpiniste, auteur, anthropologiste et concepteur du Cho Oyu project. Il revenait de l'Ama Dablam, la montagne que j'ai vue l'année passée lors de ma marche culturelle vers l'Everest. ENG: I met these 2 teams of French long distance cyclists at the Marrakech airport. Claire-Marie and Raphaël are cycling together on a tandem, while the Jessica and Caro are with mountain bikes.

Jbel Toubkal summit

ENG: I took one week holiday in Morocco. From Marrakech, I went to the high Atlas, climbed Jbel Toubkal (4167m), the highest summit of the country and resumed by an anti-clockwise trek back to my starting point. The return trip Refuge-Summit-Refuge took 6 hours and the total trek took 4 days but I pushed hard on the third day finishing at 2 am. Climbing & descending a pass in the snow just lit by the moonlight is a great pleasure for me.

FRA: J'ai pris une semaine de congé au Maroc. De Marrakech j'ai été faire un trek dans le haut Atlas tout en gravissant dès le début le plus haut sommet, le Jbel Toubkal. J'ai mis 6 heures poure effectuer l'aller-retour vers le sommet et le trek complet m'a pris 4 jours en poussant fort puisque le 3ème jour j'ai terminé à 2 heures du matin. J'ai passé le dernier grand col dans la neige sous la lumière de la lune, ce qu ime procure toujours un certain plaisir.

Kayak towards France

ENG: Like last year I did a 2 hour kayak test with Guy Dubart. This time no more urban but at the edge of the border between Belgium and France on a new re-opened for navigation waterway between Pecq (near Tournai) and Roubaix (near Lille). We saw some beatiful duck nesting but also already some pollution.
UPDATE: I bought the inflatable canoe of Guy on 29/12/2010.

FRA: Comme l'année passée, j'ai fait 2 heures de Kayak avec Guy Dubart. Cette fois-ci, pas intra-muros mais dans la nature entre la Belgique et la France sur un tronçon de canal réouvert entre Pecq et Roubaix. Nous avons pu observer des canards près de leurs nids mais aussi déjà de la pollution.

I caught up with Jeremy Roumian (last year's Chocolate Sherpa expedition), Christian Clot (Patagonia specialist, Vice-president of the Society of French explorers), Willy Minec, Ludovic Hubler and saw and talked to Swiss adventurer Xavier Rosset who stayed 300 days alone surviving on an Tongan island in the Pacific.

ENG: I've been driving to Denmark to meet Ripley Davenport, who trekked across a vast expanse of Mongolia earlier this year. We had discussed trailer design a year ago. ENG: This weekend I met the team of The Word Tri(athlon) who was in Brussels. Charlie Wittmack is undertaking a huge challenge: swimming down the Thames from London to the North Sea, across the Channel to Calais, then cycle from there to Calcutta and finishing with an almost 1000km run to the Everest to climb it for the second time as he did it in 2003. I met Charlie, his wife Cate and team in Brussels. I also spend time with the team (Andy Stoll and Brian Triplett) showing Brussels around while Charlie took a deserved rest after the long swim of Monday. Flying in Goodyear blimp.

ENG: I was lucky to win a 1 hour trip in the Goodyear blimp to day. It's a sort of Zeppelin without structure inside. I'm wondering when I'll learn flying ? Among the photos: the shadow of the aircraft, the atomium & the Koekelberg Basilica, a prison (I guess?), the tour de France and a cycling fan's garden. We had to stay away from the helicopter because of the wind that can get use near them.

ENG: This week I have been to a public speaking of Polar explorer Alain Hubert in Mons, followed by the show "The testament of the Ice". As you know my versatility in exploration, it's now time to reveal where I'll be next week: I will attempt to become the first person to walk unsupported between the extreme lattitude of Iceland, from North to South. Passion for Explorers

ENG: Today I have been to a yearly Rotary Club district meeting in Bruges where Polar explorer Dixie Dansercoer and his American wife Julie did a keynote speech on the passion to (out)perform. I quickly said hi to Dixie then went back to Brussels and spent the afternoon chatting with Julian Monroe Fisher who is fellow of the Explorers Club. We shared stories and a few beers.

ENG: I attended this 1-day conference at the Palace of the Academies. I listened to all scientists showing the contribution of the Belgian research to the achievements of the International Polar Year 2007-2009. It was interesting but complicated (very specific and detailed domains) to understand except for the slideshow of Alain Hubert about the construction of the Princess Elisabeth Antarctic station.

FRA: J'ai suivi cette conférence d'une journée au Palais des Académies. J'ai écouté tous les scientifiques qui ont montré la contribution de la recherche Belge et les résultats obtenus lors de l'année Polaire Internationale 2007-2009. Ce fût intéressant mais compliqué a comprendre (domaines précis et détaillés) sauf pour les diaspos d'Alain Hubert sur la construction de la station Belge Princesse Elisabeth.

Baikal Expedition conference

ENG: I met Hogan Beernaert yesterday at the premiere of his last year Baikal expedition. He crossed the lake solo during the winter. It was really a great show, Hogan speaking very naturally and adding a lot of funny details that made the audience laugh many times. His next expedition plan involves a solo return trip to the 1996 location of the Magnetic North pole starting from Resolute Bay in Canada.

FRA: J'ai rencontré Hogan Beernaert à la première présentation sur son expédition solitaire à ski à travers le lac Baikal gelé en hiver. Il a une manière bien à lui de raconter son expédition et avec des pointes d'humour qui ont mise la salle hilare plusieurs fois. London Adventure Travel Live

ENG: I went the entire weekend to the Adventure Travel Show in London. I wasn't interested in all the so called adventure guiding companies but I caught back with the British adventure world. I showed my photo books and Simpson desert trailer to National Geographic TV and to someone from the Royal Geographic Society. The best part was to listen to the speeches of Doug Scott, Alex Hibbert, Charlie McGrath, Neil Laughton, Tarka L'Herpinière, Dave Cornthwaite, Alastair Humpreys, Benedict Allen and Sarah Outen. I also had a chat with desert specialist Sam McConnell. I unfortunately missed Simon Yates "the man who cut the rope" as I had beers for him, advice given by our common friend Brigitte Muir-Koch.

The unexpected meetings of the weekend was a facebook French friend who was also in London for the opening of the French "Boulangerie" of one of her friends on Fleet street. She's one of the few friends I have and actually never met physically before. I even worked a bit to make the rasberry cakes for the day. In the train I met a professional make-up artist who could easily transform anyone's face into a zombie or half dead full bloody injured person.

FRA: J’ai été tout le weekend au Adventure Travel Show de Londres. Je n’étais pas intéressé par les agences de tour guidé mais j’ai pu me replonger dans le cercle des aventuriers Anglais. ENG: I met Dixie Dansercoer today at his home. He gave me a few tips and lots a books to read so I can boost my knowledge about polar travel but of course it won't replace experience on the field. We discussed about our future expeditions and maybe I can bring some ideas to help him too.

PADI Ice Diver

ENG: I just got certified as PADI Ice Diver. All dives happened in a fresh water lake at 2480m in Orcières, France. I did 4 dives with all theory and exercices. The water was 3°C. The first day was very sunny (see photos) but very cold (-21°C in the valley when I woke up at 6am). The second day was very bad and snowy but the temperature in the water is always warmer than outside!

FRA: J'ai terminé ma certification de plongeur sous glace PADI. Toutes les plongées se sont déroulées dans un lac d'eau douce à Orcières près de Gap en France. L'eau était à 3°C. Le premier jour était très ensoleillé (voir photos) mais très froid (-21°C au réveil le matin dans la vallée à 6h). Le deuxième jour, le temps était neigeux et venteux mais pas de problème car sous l'eau il fait toujours plus chaud que dehors!

Adventurers in Paris

ENG: Like last year, I went to the "Marine Fair/Salon du Nautique" in Paris. First I met again with Sebastien Roubinet who I met last year in Dijon. He's preparing his next sailing trip across the arctic ocean with Polar adventurer Rodolphe André for next summer. A world first sailing trip also passing via the North pole. We discussed mainly about his boat and how it's made. His expertise is necessary for my next expedition I will launch in a few months.

A few hours later I joined the press waiting for Jean-Gabriel Chelala to arrive after his adventure around the world.

I finished my day in Paris chatting with explorer Christian Clot whom I was planning a nordic ski traverse of the Vercors in France.

FRA: Comme l'année passée, j'ai été au salon du nautique de Paris. J'y ai d'abord revu Sébastien Roubinet et son partenaire d'expédition Rodolphe André qui partiront l'été prochain tenter de traverser l'océan arctique à la voile pure en passant par le pôle Nord. Une première mondiale. Nous avons discuté à propose de son voilier et comment il est fabriqué, car son expertise m'est utile pour ma prochaine expédition que j'annoncerai dans quelques mois.

Plus tard j'ai rejoins la presse au Parvis Notre Dame qui attendait Jean-Gabriel Chelala qui terminait son aventure autour du monde.

J'ai terminé ma journée à Paris à discuter avec Christian Clot avec qui j'allais faire du ski de rando dans le Vercors.

Kayak in Tournai

ENG: Today, I've been kayaking on the Escaut River in Tournai with Guy Dubart. I capsized once at the start and the water was rather cold. But no big deal I had a 3mm wetsuit and back on the deck we emptied the kayak filled with water. The highlight was passing under the "pont des trous" in the center of Tournai. We passed many barges as well.

FRA: Aujourd'hio, j'ai été kayaké sur l'Escaut à Tournai avec Guy Dubart. J'ai chaviré au début et l'eau était assez froide. Mais j'avais mis une combi de plongée de 3mm et ça aide. A nouveau sur le ponton, on vide le kayak rempli d'eau. Les points intéressant de la ballade furent passer sous le pont des trous et passer quelques péniches.

ENG: I went this weekend to London at the Royal Geographic Society to attend the EXPLORE2009. I went with Jeremy Roumian and we spend a lot of time with Christian Clot and Melusine Mallender talking about past and future expeditions. Michael Palin came to us to chat which was a honor. This event is every year and very useful for everyone who wants to get inspired and start planning his own expeditions.

C'est Notre Terre

ENG: Today I've been visiting the "C'est notre Terre 2" (it's our planet) exhibition. The exhibition is very long and instructive but I didn't learn that much being already interested for years into how we can change our behavior to have less impact on our planet/Environment. I like the photo of the artist showing the Brussels' Atomium into an Arctic-like landscape. Actually that'll be good to have such a training field next door. Just kidding.

FRA: Aujourd'hio j'ai été visité l'expo C'est notre terre 2. La visite est très longue et instructive mais je n'ai finalement pas appris grand chose puisque je m'intéresse depuis des années à comment changer mon comportement pour diminuer mon impact sur la planète/environnement. J'aime beaucoup la photo de l'artiste qu imontre l'Atomium de Bruxelles dans un décors Arctique. Ca serait pratique d'avoir un tel terrain d'entraînement proche de chez moi. Bon j'rigole!

ENG: I have been thinking about this for over a year now and today I made a first rough draft of the idea. A pulka like this one from the soloice expedition of Cameron Smith. Basically, I try to make it smaller thus lighter and maybe stronger. So the pulka is on skis to reduce dragging on soft snow/slush and help avoiding snow to be blocked and accumulate against the pulka during a snow storm. It opens and using the walking poles the cover can be kept open and strong. For the feet part, the small room behind pops out like a matchbox. All seethrough parts are supposed to be tent-canvas. The orange part is the room under the sleeping room. Openings allow to reach food, equipment or fuel. All white parts are made of carbonfiber and kevlar. I plan to have nice warm colors inside to help getting the spirits high when in a snowstorm for days. Maybe have survival blanket film as wallpaper. It should float and weight less than 10kg so that it could possibly put on the back with straps and be used as a backpack when hauling impossible. I designed this with Google Sketchup. My previous cart, the "Camwheel" was designed with my dad and built in less than 3 weeks and is probably still the strongest hauling cart on wheels for humans in the world. It helped me the break a world record and make a world first in desert crossing.

J'essyer d'améliorer la pulka en diminuant sa taille et en l'allégeant, voir ela renre plus solide. Elle est sur skis pour diminuer le frottement en la tirant dans la poudre ou neige fondante. Aussi pour éviter l'accumulation de neige lors d'une tempête de neige. Elle s'ouvre et on bloque le toit avec les bâtons de marche. La partie arrière sort comme une boîte d'allumettes et sert à loger les pieds. Les parties transparentes sont considérées comme de la toile de tente. La partie orange est la partie rangement pour vivres, fuel, équipement est accessible via des trappes sous la zone de couchage. Les parties blanches sont en fibres de carbone et kevlar. Je veux de couleurs chaudes à l'intérieur pour garder la bonne humeur lors de longues journées en pleine tempête de neige. Ou alors tapisser les parois de couverture de survie. Ca doit pouvoir flotter et peser moins de 10kg afin de pouvoir être transportée sur le dos avec un système de portage lorsqu'il est vraiment impossible de la tirer. J'ai tout dessiné avec Google Sketchup. Ma charette précédente, la "Camwheel" a été dessinée avec mon père et construites en moins de 3 semaines et reste à jour cejour probablement la charette pour humain la plus robuste au monde. Grâce à elle, j'ai battu un record et réalisé une première mondiale en traversant le désert de Simpson.

Mont St-Michel, Chartres, Paris

ENG: I left Lorient and drove to the Mount Saint-Michel, one of the the most seen attraction in France (3 millions, each year, UNESCO world heritage site). Except for the cars and tourist busses, you really feel you're going back in time there on the rock. By Sunday noon I reached Chartres where Pauline, Elisabeth and Damien arrived back from there 2 months journey driving from Paris to Jerusalem and back. I sponsored them by lending them my HD camera and tripod as they did a few interviews of people along the way related to their religions and beliefs. I finished my day in Paris at the Gday Sundays.

FRA: J'ai quitté Lorient et roulé vers le Mont Saint-Michel (patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO). A aprt les voitures et les bus de touristes, on se sent vraiment hors du temps. Lorient in Bretagne

ENG: I have been driving to Lorient this Saturday, about 800km south of Brussels. I wanted to see again the Polar Vessel TARA, which left for a 3 year journey around the world to study the Oceans and how much CO2 the hold. I also met Pascal Bouche, an old friend from my hometown Mouscron. He will leave with his entire family (wife, 2 young girls and baby boy around mid-November on his boat and sail around the world in 7 years for his educational project Globe@Child. His 3 kids will be the adventurers to discover the world and reunite all other kids together on this wiki communicating platform.

FRA: J'ai roulé jusque Lorient ce samedi, près de 800km au Sud de Bruxelles. Je voulais revoir le vaisseau polaire TARA qui repart pour 3 ans autour du monde. ENG: I participated at the Dodentocht but for the past weeks I had an injury (Osteitis Pubis, a sort of tendonitis) so I did my best and a good start but when the pain settled in, I became reasonable and left the challenge. Hopefully, I'll finish it next year.

Back from Everest expedition

ENG: Well, I'm back to work after a week of sickness after my 1 month in Nepal. I'm already starting to plan my expeditions for the next 2 years. But here are some photos taken mainly in Everest Base camp. I met there Apa Sherpa, who just climbed Everest for the 19th time yesterday (no one has climbed that peak so much). Next to us is Joseph from my "Chocolate Sherpa expedition" Unfortunately Norbert became affected with AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness) and had to turn back and go down just 2 hour from the base camp. I experienced AMS as well 3 days before him, but I got more lucky and could finish my walk I had started in Katmandu. I walked over 400 km and our team organized the highest chocolate tasting in the world to raise funds for the Nepal Mobile Hospital project. It was of course Belgian chocolate and the new super antioxydant ACTICOA chocolate from Barry-Callebaut. FRA: Je suis de retour au boulot après une semaine de maladie depuis le retour du mois passé au Népal. J’ai commencé à planifier les expéditions pour les 2 prochaines années. Voici déjà quelques photos du camp de base de l’Everest. J’y ai rencontré Apa sherpa, qui vient de réussir sa 19ème ascension de l’Everest hier (personne ne l’a gravi autant de fois que lui). A côté de nous, Joseph de l’expédition "Chocolate Sherpa". Malheureusement, Norbert a eu le mal des montagnes 2 heures avant d’arriver au camp de base et a fait demi-tour. Moi aussi j’avais la maladie depuis 3 jours déjà mais j’ai dû être plus chanceux et j’ai pu terminer la marche commencée à Katmandou. J’ai donc parcouru plus de 400km et l’équipe à organisé la plus haute dégustation de chocolat au Monde pour récolter des fonds pour le projet de l’hôpital mobile. ENG: Today I met Pierre Soete, surgeon working in Kathmandu for almost 10 years now and basically doing more than just being a surgeon. He's also acting as consultant to help hospitals and trying to find funds for them in Nepal.

On the way to his home, I found a sign showing I wasn't far from the geographical center of Belgium. It was the opportunity to go there.

FRA: Aujourd'hui, j'ai rencontré Pierre Soete, chirugien travaillant à Katmandou depuis presque 10 ans. ENG: I've been to the "Salon du Nautique" in Paris. I met several friends I met in Dijon and by luck I met Jean-Gabriel Chelala who is doing th tour of the world by human power. He pedaled across the Atlantic ocean with his little craft. I also saw the TARA sailing boat, that was prisoner of the arctic ice for over a year!

FRA: Au salon du Nautique à PAris, je revois des amis de Dijon et par chance je tombe sur Jean-Gabriel Chelala qui réalise un tour du monde à propulsion humaine, à la force des mollets ! Un sacré vaisseau avec lequel il a déjà pédalé sur l'océan Atlantique. J'y ai aussi vu la vaisseau TARA qui a été prisonnier des glaces de l'arctique pendant plus d'un an.

Week of adventure

ENG: This week was simply fantastic. Monday I went to a debate organized by the Friends of the Earth about how to find a campaign to reduce the consumption of bottled water. To consume 1 liter of water, 3 liters of water are gone and almost half a liter of petrol is used into the plastic and transport. In most countries water from the tap is just fine and bottled water is marketed to be better but isn't often true.

Tuesday evening I was invited at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Picard Wallonia. The president gave a small speech about my World first desert crossing in Australia and we then listened to the presentation of Belgian explorer Alain Hubert about climate change.

From Thursday to Sunday, I was in Dijon at the adventure film festival. I met several adventures, showed the CamWheel of my last adventure. It finished by a sunday barbecue with adventurers and a visit to some Dijon's wine fields.

FRA: Cette semaine a été fantastique. Lundi, j'ai participé à un débat organisé par les amis de la terre dont le sujet était comment faire une campagne pour diminuer notre consommation d'eau en bouteille. Pour 1 litre d'eau bue, 3 litres d'eau potable ont été nécessaire et près d'un demi litre de pétrole est utilisé dans la fabrication du plastique et du transport. Dans nos pays, l'eau du robinet est très bonne à la consommation et l'eau en bouteille n'est pas forcément meilleure.

Mardi soir, j'ai été invité par la chambre de commerce et d'industrie de la Wallonie Picarde. Le président a fait un petit discours sur mon exploit de première traversée du désert de Simpson en Australie. Ensuite nous avons écouté l'exposé d'Alain Hubert -explorateur Belge- sur les défis climatiques.

De jeudi à dimanche, j'étais au festival du film d'aventure de Dijon. J'y ai rencontré des aventuriers, et exposé la CamWheel. Cela s'est terminé par un dimanche ensoleillé avec un barbecue entre aventuriers et la visite de vignobles de la région Dijonnaise.

Brigitte Muir-Koch

ENG: Thirty months ago, I met Brigitte Muir-Koch in Sydney while she was presenting a short slideshow about her and a guiding trip she was leading in Nepal for World Expeditions. Brigitte was born in Belgium and became Australian citizen. She was the first Australian woman (first person born in Wallonia-Belgium)on top of the Everest and she was also the very first Australian/Belgian who climbed the 7 summits (highest summit of each continent) and did other adventures in deserts and even a small trip to the south pole. After contacting her, we finally met in Liège for a few hours where we shared Belgian beers (what else?!), adventure ideas, etc... I also filmed her answering some questions about her experience about the Australian deserts. I now think I have enough material to start writing a storyboard for my Simpson desert trek documentary.

FRA: J'ai rencontré Brigitte Muir-Koch pour la première fois il y a une trentaine de mois à Sydney. Elle présentait une trek de World Expeditions qu'elle allait guider au Nepal. La présentation fût précédée d'un court récapitulatif sur ses exploits. Brigitte est née en Belgique et est devenue Australienne. Elle fût la première personne de Wallonie à conquérir l'Everest et la première personne de Belgique a gravir les 7 sommets (le plus haut sommet de chaque continent). Elle réalisa d'autres aventures dans les déserts et même un petit trip au pôle sud. Après l'avoir contactée, nous avons finalement partagé des bières à Liège et discuté de projets d'aventures, etc... J'ai également filmé une petite interview sur son expérience du désert Australien pour le documentaire sur ma traversée du désert de simpson.

Another world first in my pocket

ENG: Five weeks ago I was in the middle of nowhere in the Simpson desert, ready to abandon as my progress was very slow. Too slow to even make it halfway through. Then I strived to continue hard, even harder and the hell of the North became a paradise in the South. I made it just in time to become the first person to walk the length of the Simpson desert (most arid one) in Australia. My adventure was completely unsupported (no fooddrops, no resupply, no support vehicle around).

FRA: Il y a 5 semaines, j'étais au milieu de nullepart dans le désert de Simpson en Australie, prêt à abandonner car ma progression était très lente. Trop lente pour même atteindre la moitié de mon défi. J'ai finalement trouvé les motivations pour continuer et même pousser encore plus fort à travers l'enfer du Nord de ce désert. Et puis j'ai atteint le paradis au Sud et ce fût plus facile. J'ai réussi juste à temps et je suis devenu la première personne à traverser le désert (le plus aride) de Simpson en Australie sur toute sa longueur. Mon aventure était en complète autonomie et sans aucune assistance (pas de réapprovisionnement, pas de véhicule de support me suivant).

ENG:Psychology of explorers. Stress and decision taking in extreme environments. That kind of sentence makes me thrill. Well, I took a direct train from Brussels to Paris and attended that open discussion at the Zango café-bar in Paris. It was jointly organised by the "Guilde Européenne du Raid" and the Society of French explorers. Speakers were: Cécile Vallet, Sahara specialist and explorer Régis Belleville, and Christian Clot.
It was very interesting to hear how you don't realize when you've reached your limits and are probably not able to think properly. It was great to meet Régis who I had called a few months ago to ask advices on water consumption. I was also invited to speak about my Simpson desert trek expedition. Lots of questions were asked by the audience. I also had a quick radio interview for a University radio.

FRA:Psychology of explorers. Psychologie des explorateurs. Stress et prise de décision en milieu extrême. C'est le genre de phrase qui me fait frissonner. Et donc, j'ai sauté dans un train Bruxelles-Paris et assisté à cette discussion ouverte au Zango café-bar à Paris. Organisé par la Guilde Européenne du Raid" et la Société des Explorateurs Français. Les intervenants étaient: Cécile Vallet, l'explorateur Régis Belleville et spécialiste du Sahara, etChristian Clot. Ce fût très intéressant d'entendre comment on a du mal à se rendre compte qu'on a atteint ses limites et que on devient inconscient que l'on commence à prendre des mauvaises décisions troublé par un jugement faux. Et j'ai enfin pu rencontrer Régis que j'avais appelé il y a quelques mois pour lui demander des conseils sur la consommation d'eau. J'ai également été invité à prendre la parole et à expliquer mon projet d'expédition dans le désert de Simpson. Le public a posé beaucoup de questions. Une radio universitaire m'a même interviewé brièvement.

ENG: I finished my Tassie adventure completely skinny, exhausted and sick. Here's 1photo taken on 08/02/2007 in Hobart by Nathalie Mundt and 4 photos taken by Chris Bray in Sydney a day later. You can see my muscles as I had no fat anymore and my right foot and calf are swollen from the trench foot disease.

ENG: Today I went to the press conference and the opening of the new Belgian polar station. Prince Philip of Belgium, explorer Alain Hubert and politicians, all were attending. A few months ago I met the design engineer Johan Berte, because I wanted to be part of the adventure to built it in Antartica. I spoke also to a few glaciologist from the University of Brussels, Frank Pattyn and Denis Samyn.
Belgian glaciologist are well known for their expertise and works around the planet regarding the measure/modeling of the evolution of the iceshelf and glaciers.

FRA: Aujourd'hui j'ai assisté à la conférence de presse sur l'ouverture de la nouvelle station polqire Belge. Le prince Philippe, l'explorateur Alain Hubert et les politiciens étaient présents. Il y a quelques mois, j'avais rencontré Johan Berte, le concepteur principal de la station car je voulais faire parti de cette aventure de construction de station en Antarctique. Day1 : Tuesday 21/12/2006 – out of ferry, last shopping in devonport, in pharmacy : horrified by weight of all my stuff: 49kg! hitch hike to cradle Mt. Forget a plastic bag in last pickup car that brought me. The bag contained my goretex-like strong rainjacket. I buy K-way rainjacket at visitor center. Ask permission to sleep in emergency hut at foot of Cradle Mt. start 18h – kichen hut 21h30.
On overland
D2 up at 4h50, summit cradle at 6h15, summit barn bluff at 12h15, go 2 huts further
D3 summit pelion west at 16h
D4 summit Ossa at 16h, arrive hut 20h (kia ora)
Off track
D5 Xmas day : snow, follow kia ora creek south bank, rain, mud, snow. Very cold. Impossible to get proper GPS points, sometimes can see Mt Massif, very slow progression, end of day I start slow clim towards big gun pass. Sleeping bag is wet, clothes too (no spares), I finally decide to sleep naked to try to dry sleeping bag with body, takes forever.
D6 sick, leave at 11 when warmer, don’t reach the pass yet
D7 reach pass, excellent views of acropolis, sleep probably not too far from Mt Eros (cannot see as fog)
D8 bush bashing till a lake, later reach lake elysia, too tired, too late, fall through knees, I cannot climb towards minotaur, I decide to go down labyrinth to pine valley hut. Take very long time as I can only go down backwards (no power in knees)
Overland
D9 reach narcissus hut by 12h15, summit Gould by 18h, back at hut 21h
Cuvier route (not a maintained track anymore)
D10 route not easy to follow. Summit Olympus 20h00
D11 slow and tired, reach lake st clair at 13h15, rest, make a few calls, leave at 18h30 to Mt Rufus. Stop underway by 21h30

D12 Happy new year! Summit Mr Rufus 12h30. go down to gingerbread hut and gingerbread track to A10 18h30. Meet first people of the year, talk to them, hard to refuse wine !
D13 track to King William 1, summited at 14h, off track across the range, when 19h at last hill before going down to divide creek (4285-53205)…notice cannot find my jumper (containing compass, headlight,whistle). Put backpack down, take GPS point, run back to KW summit. No jumper, in half darkness try to backtrack on same path I used during the day. Damn lucky to find a black jumper in the darkness with no light ! run back to backpack… GPS is wrong, cannot find it. Pass all night fighting against the cold climbing up and down the hill, scanning the mountain (yeah no kidding) having a 15min break every hour to “sleep” until cooled down. Find backpack by 6 am, sleep to 9h.
D14 go down, then uphill to second part of the range, the chosen path is very dangerous, often scrambling vertically holding onto grass and roots. Loose beanie and watch in the scrub. Sleep at lake Anne, wonderful place.
D15 rather easy day, summit King William 2 by 12h15
D16 rest of range is rather ok, but can be risky in some places. Summit King William 3 by 10h. at the end of the range, I see entire valley, I see a line in the distance, I use monocular : it’s the disused airfield. I go down SE, very dangerous as slope is 80degrees at times, I just throw my pack 20m several times down and literally slide myself holding on to the grass or jumping from the cliffs in the neighboring trees. It’s jungle now and wet, the entire plain is filled with leeches everywhere. Heavy rain all night, impossible to count all leeches on the net of the tent.
D17 airfield at 14h. But the track is gone. I walk SSE and by 17h I find what’s left of the track, going downhill into a dense forest. Every 50-100m or so there’s pink tape, but the track is overgrown, very hard to follow…on instinct. By 19h I get lost, walk till 21h in the dark with my leech friends.
D18 aim of the day, cross the river Gell river. I reach it by 19h30. With 3 days of rain, the current is strong, width around 10-12m. I remove clothes, put half on my stuff in 59liter drybag and swim accros. Swim back and again with rest of stuff. I’m cold but start to walk asap to get warm.

D19 (08/01/2007) – leave by 13h, walk to start of Denison range, reach 52940
D20 wonderful day, reach lake Rhona, meet hikers including a Belgian Sheila.
D21 follow rasselas track to Gordon river. The track has been changed and crosses river a few km after the gordonvale farm. I do not cross the river and follow it south on the west bank. I reach the river by 23h, my headlight is useless in the scrub, so I walk both hands in front of me lead by the sound of the water. Am I an animal now?
D22 I cross the Gordon, knee deep. Very easy. It’s hard to find my way with no GPS reception. But I suddenly reach the adamsfield track at 19h, later cross the fallen bridge on the Florentine river, meet people on the other side. One leads me on a well marked track to the B61. He’s there to protest against the logging. I pitch my tent at 21h on the side of the road.
D23 I hitch to Maydena, make a few calls and hitch back to the sameplace. Walk on the road (easy but boring) the on the C607 to the Mt Anne track. I reach the hut at 21h30. 2 people in the hut do not believe some set walking at 19h in the rain.
D24 too tired, and last hut before the end, I write my diary till 16h, notice I’m halfway with the food then start to walk to Mt Anne. Summit at 19h. Back on main track I continue till I’m sure I’m on the track (close to a cairn)
D25 muddy, rain, mud pools, finish Mt Anne circuit, and reach Edgar dam at 21h30.
D26 walk to scotts dam peak, use mackays track and alpha moraine. Reach and summit Mt Hesperus by 22h, sllep on the top.
D27 summit Mt Orion at 19h, camp at lake Oberon

D28 (17/01/2007) Summit Pegasus 9h, Capricorn 12h, Taurus 20h15 walk to Lake Haven 22h. I notice I skinny, I decide from now on to eat more.
D29 summit Scorpio 11h, Phoenix 16h, reach lake promontory 13h30. Crags of Andromeda in darkness is very hard to lake Rosanne 23h30. My feet hurt very much, painful as burnt.
D30 diary, leave at 14h30. Reach 52145 by 21
D31 leave at 10h, rain all day, I camp a few 100 meters of Federation peak (FP)
D32 bad weather, stay in tent, no photos, got a swollen calf (start of infected leg – Trench foot disease)
D33 bad weather in morning, clear up at 15h, let’s go. Leave tent and stuff, just go with camera and musli bars. Summit FP at 16h. going down meet 3 guys going up. Go back to tent, reach their camp by 20h. walk a bit further to tiny camp spot on the track they told me. Underway fall from 4 m high on my back, 2 backpacks is a good shock absorber, I just felt the gas canister in my spine.

D34 (23/01/2007) – going down, quiet dangerous when wet, so slow. Walk on track until a dense forest (around 4640). 21h30.
D35 going on the farmhouse creek track is hard, muddy… I miss the junction and end up at the end on the gravel road, 14h30. I turn back and knowing my speed I roughly know when to slow down and pay attention to an indication of a side track to lake Sydney. I find it at 17h. I reach lake Sydney at 20h. I follow the east side of the lake to the south and camp at 21h.
D36 very hard in the scrub to reach Mt Bobs. But even if I’m as close a 200m from it, the wind is blowing hard and it’s freezing. I don’t go for it. I go South. I can only cover 2-3 km that day. Hell has started. Climbing bobs’s knob 1 is extremely hard and dangerous, it’s a chaos of massive rocks with dense strong scrub. Usually I try to find my camping spot by 7pm so I’ll find it before 8pm. Now I know that a good camp spot is important. I start searching by 6 pm. I find something exposed in the scrub, 2 square meters, where I dig around to be able to put my tent. I sleep on roots, in the rain, with the strongest wind I ever had. I survive the cold by burning gas in my tent during 30 min per hour for the most of the night. The wind is just shaving the heat off the tent. I manage to burn holes in my tent net, in my sleeping bag and my polyprop shirt. Cold, hungry, thirsty.
D37 I finally get out of my tent in the early afternoon hoping for blue sky soon. I go down SE and hope to find a place with no trees to get a GPS point. (I head, I guess towards (bobs map) 4.69,5N-52.01,0) Progression is slow and hard in the pandanus trees. By 19h I start looking for a flat place. After an hour of looking while still trying to go SE, I camp between pandanus trees. The tent is not tight, heavy rain all night.
D38 When I open the tent I discover it wasn’t rain, it hailed all night. About 2 cm of iceballs as big as beans around me. Good sign as I lacked water. My calf is not improving, it gets bigger. By 15h I reach low dense vegetation. I walk in it till 19h.

D39 (28-01-2007) Weather is shit, depression day, I only do diary, eat all what’s left of muesli bars. I don’t get out of the tent for 36 hours.
D40 weather a bit better, I have to move as I have no water anymore. During the day I cross twice a wide stream at 1 hour interval. Later that night I find out I certainly crossed the bend of the Roberts river twice. I fell in it during the second crossing, swept away by the current as it was deep. Position heading always SE:
4.70,0-52.00,0 / 4.70,7-51.99,2 /4.70,8-51.98,8 / then from this point going SSE.
I find a good place to sleep, putting leaves under the tent to insulate from the ground. Pain in knees +basin, dunno why. I check my body, I see it’s all skinny, the fat is gone, my muscles too.
D41 I depress all day, thinking of friends, a few tear drops, why am I here… I wake up during the night thinking I’m bushbashing and actually doing it in my sleeping bag. I broke, I was delirious. Cold sweat and nightmares.
D42 I think it’s day 40 (I wrote a bad 38 into a 36 after day 37 in my diary, which means since day 38 I think I’m day 36). I think I should have been at the end by now, but I’m far from it. No idea where I am. I get out and decide to head South (let’s say along 4.71,0) and not to climb La Perouse. I’ll go for Precipituous Bluff instead.
During the day I decide to go SW towards the Salibury river. Later, I decided to escape by that river (4.71,0-51.97,0) I go down into extremely steep slope. I reach the river (tiny stream) by 20h. I walk on the rocks in the river bed until 21h where I camp on the river bank on a very flat nice spot.
D43 (start around position (4.70,3-51.96,4). I follow the tiny stream which wasn’t the river but was kinda parallel to it as it joins a much wider stream with current. I cross it to be on the West side. I probably reached around (4.68,0) that day. Still no GPS coverage. Batteries might have not lasted the cold after all these days. I carried 3 sets of rechargeable AA and 20 alcaline AA. All almost dead. GPS died that day, probably humidity inside. And don’t need it’s compass anymore as I follow the river.
D44 I know these point for sure - 17h: 4.66,0-51.96,3 – 18h: 4657-51.96,2 – 20h30: 4.65,5-51.96,0
(The only time I have left is in my camera)

D45 (03/02/2007) leave at 10h join New river at 10h30. My progression is faster. Luckily there has been sun for 2 days now and no rain so the level of water should not raise.
D46 I wake up by a tiger at 7h, just kidding. Probably a Devil as the noise is loud and scary. I hear it like fighting with something. Walk is easier I reach probably 1-2 km/h. Soon in the morning I reach a big bend in the river, the vegetation becomes suddenly extremely impenetrable. I cover +-300 m in 6 hours just after the bend. The bend is max 2 km away from the mouth to the lagoon but I’ll never reach it. That day I probably cover 1,5 km to camp around 4.64,3-51.87,5 and I still don’t see the lagoon. I don’t understand. Even if I’m very slow, it’s almost impossible not to see it yet, I must be still far from it, incredible.
D47 about an hour after I started walking I still don’t see the lagoon, the vegetation is still extremely dense, I even start to ask God’s help! A few minutes later, it’s less dense, I can see through the forest, and I see some blue East. It’s the lagoon. I go East across and reach the lagoon at 11h00. (4.64,4-51.87,0) I need water, I walk in the water where it’s shallow. I suddenly notice that the bottom is hard enough to walk on it, it’s not swampy. I decide to walk in the lagoon until the end if it remains that hard. It works. During that walk in the water, it rains, it blows but I don’t care, if I can make it to the South coast track I’ll be safe. My camera dies underway due to humidity (no way to know the time now). The cold water calms down the pain in the swollen calf but the tension of the skin is still very intense. It’s swollen with I dunno what (until I was said it was an infection I thought about a small fracture or something else). I meet 2 campers at Osmiridium beach. I may be safe but I have a plane to catch from Hobart to Sydney on 09/02 in the morning. And of course I have to tell people I’m safe as I’m overdue.
D48 I reach granite beach by 12h ??? but meet 2 hikers on the top who tell me it’s already 16h15. I must hurry to go down before it’s too dark. I arrive in the dark at South cape rivulet. I accept my first food: the rest of sri-lanka rice with a bit of fish from 4 campers. I of course eat the burnt rice in the pot.
D49 (07-02-2007) As I know I’m gonna make it, I accept any food on my way to cockle creek: cookies, a sandwish, a chocolate bar. I call a friend from the ranger at cockle creek and ask him to pass the message.
I arrive in Hobart round 4 pm.

Today 16-08, more than 7 months have passed. I still haven’t recovered from the trench foot disease. The sensitivity in my toes is back for most of ‘em at about 70%. The left big one is still very numb. I really feel it’s hard to run or have a proper balance without 100% of my toes. I hope by 2008 I’m gonna be able to train again and lose the fat I gained after losing 10 kg (normal weight 70kg/1m81 – before trip after eating butter: 72kg – end : 62kg).
PS: If some sees a person walking with a grey raincoat in Tasmania (if the person is from Tassie)… It’s probably mine (looks nice, strong, sealed black zips, Velcro on the sleeves, removable cap) with brand QUECHUA (from decathlon.com). I remember one of the 2 women who picked me up, is working at Queenstown’s hospital (I think cleaning, not nurse nor doctor).

ENG: My feet do get better, I feel 3/10 toes and took my weight back. I worked a bit on the website and started a 6 months training into computer network administration (MS certification in Windows 2003 server + Linux)

My adventure in Tasmania was very dangerous and lasted longer than the 40 expected days as I walked for 49 days. I started with 49 kg in my backpacks. I lost 10 kg. Because I was so late, my friend -and Australian adventurer- Chris Bray (on my right) was worried. He did the right thing and checked -amongst others- if I had used my EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). I called just a few hours after to tell him I was finished and alive.(see his email here below).

I just got a call from Louis-Philippe 2min ago, using the ranger's phone at the end of the South Coast Track - He's finished - He sounds incredibly weak and said he's "just happy to be alive".

Thanks very much for all involved and sorry for any hassle caused by starting to raise the alarm, I think it was the right thing to do. I'm glad he's ok! He'll have a hell of a story to tell.

Now back in Belgium since 1 week, I send CVs to find a job.
I recover from a very bad infected leg -the infection spread to both feet- and frostbites (not that bad but hurts) on all toes and fingertips. I gain weight slightly but have troubles to walk properly, I cannot even run as my mind pilots small atrophied muscles. By the way, happy 2007 to all of you!

Retour en Belgique...vivant

Ma dangereuse aventure en Tasmanie a duré plus des 40 jours prévus. J'ai commencé avec 49 kg dans mes sacs et j'ai peiné pendant 47 jours. J'ai perdu 10 kg. Puisque j'étais en retard, mon ami aventurier Chris Bray, inquiet sans nouvelles, a tenté de savoir -entres autres- si j'avais déclenché ma balise de détresse (voir message plus ici haut). Quelques heures plus tard, j'appelais pour lui dire j'étais au bout et vivant.

A présent en Belgique depuis 1 semaine j'ai déjà envoyé des CVs pour du travail.
Je soigne une sale infection à la jambe -qui s'est propagée aux 2 pieds-et mes légères engelures aux orteils et bout des doigts (pas trop grave). Je reprend doucement du poids mais je marche difficilement et ne peux pas encore courir à cause aux petits muscles atrophiés qu'il me reste. Au fait, bonne année 2007 à vous tous !

Accident

ENG: Did somthing stupid a few days ago... now I have a broken rib (or more) but apparently nothing bad inside (lungs, kidneys, spleen) even if some blood was found in the urine. I just stay calm for now.

FRA: Acrobatie stupide il y a qqs jours... j'ai une cote cassee (ou plusieurs) mais apparemment rien de grave a l'interieur (poumons, rate, reins) meme si on a retrouve du sang dans mes urines. Je reste donc calm.
